Discover the Historic Asahibashi Bridge in Asahikawa: A Symbol of Beauty and Strength

For Tourists to Asahikawa

Asahikawa has 130 rivers, large and small, including the Ishikari River, Ushishube River, and Chube River, and is crossed by more than 750 bridges. For this reason, Asahikawa is also known as the “city of rivers and bridges.”

Asahibashi Bridge spans the confluence of the Ishikari River and Ushubetsu River. This bridge is considered one of the “Eight Scenic Spots of Asahikawa” and has been selected as a “Civil Engineering Heritage by the Japan Society of Civil Engineers” and a “Hokkaido Heritage Site.” It is a truly beautiful bridge.

The first Asahibashi was a dirt bridge built in 1892. In 1894, a wooden bridge was constructed. The current bridge was completed in 1932.

Due to the proximity of a military division in the past, this bridge also played an important military role. It was built with enough strength to support special military vehicles.

Knowing this history makes us appreciate the peace we have today.
